Founder of The White Hawk Foundation, Lana Wedmore and the ADI of Corcovado, and the Board of Education in Carate have been working tirelessly for the last 12 years fighting for a new school. The new school serves Carate and the surrounding area, which is situated at the end of the road close to the Corcovado National Park, the most remote and wild place on the peninsula. Until now the children of Carate and the surrounding area went to school in an area which was inaccessible by the public transport, meaning parents had to limit their work schedules to take and collect their children. Worst still, there was no running water, toilet facilities or food preparation areas. The teacher for the school had to travel almost 2 hours each day, meaning that the school was left without a teacher for days or weeks at a time when weather was bad. The children at this school were not getting the education they deserved.
For this reason Lana has been working with the government and community members to change the location of the school and construct a new building. Finally this dream has been realized and the school is complete, the children started their education in May 2017.
The school is completely sustainable, made out of bamboo that will last 50 years. It is within walking distance for most of the children. It does have proper running water, cooking facilities and toilets, all with sustainable black and grey water systems in place. Lana is also working on raising funds for the construction of a teachers house to allow the teacher to live on site, increasing the days in school for the children.
Help us to fund the new teachers house for the school
The White Hawk Foundation is working on raising funds for the construction of a teachers house to allow the teachers to live on site, increasing the days in school for the children, especially in the rainy season, which can last many months here. $30,000 is required for the construction of this house.
